For the sake of trivia and education, help me compile a list of the first 3D games to run at 60FPS or better on consoles. Some of these titles have been remastered or remade, whereas others are simple re-releases. Doom 64 is one the most underrated N64 games. The remaster includes new brightness options, which are a huge help, as well as HD rumble support.

I say somewhat because Duke Nukem 64 was heavily censored. One awesome feature in this remastered version is the ability to play through the campaign cooperatively with up to eight players. Not to mention the Switch edition offers handheld play. This re-release is based on the original PC version. Clunky, limited control options and infamously heavy fogging make for a frustrating experience. On Switch, you get the luxury of using a dual-stick setup, and can even use motion controls if you really want.

Otherwise, the graphics have been spruced up. It also runs at 60 FPS — with some occasional dips. But it does come with a number of quality-of-life improvements, resulting in a smoother gameplay experience. You can now use on-screen markers, which highlight points of interest. This makes it harder to miss mission objectives or get stuck on where to go next.

So you no longer have to slog your way through entire levels when backtracking. This is a remake of Diddy Kong Racing. It includes most of the original content, along with some new additions. In particular, there are four new tracks, and Taj and Wizpig are now playable.

Otherwise, the game uses the touchscreen for certain actions. It did have online multiplayer, but the servers for this mode are sadly no longer available. So you could play that version instead if you preferred.

The D-pad enables you to perform manoeuvres such as somersaults and U-turns. Although you can still use the original button combos if you want. This has been revamped, enabling up to four players to battle it out over a local wireless connection. For starters, you can now play as Luigi, Wario and Yoshi in addition to Mario. You can use the touchscreen for managing and using your inventory. The game includes a number of quality-of-life changes.

Saving your game and managing the three-day time limit are much easier. It largely plays and feels like the original, but with a number of improvements that modernise the experience. The Stone of Agony item works differently due to the 3DS not having rumble feedback.

Optional gyro controls mean you can move your 3DS system to aim items such as the bow or Hookshot. Otherwise, this version offers a bit more bang for your buck. After completing the main game, you unlock Master Quest.

Unfortunately, the PC sucks in terms of gameplay and has constant hiccups. Any word on the Virtual Console's framerate? Most of the emulators I've tried "say" its running N64 games at 60fps, when it actually is just running a 3X multiple of 20fps.

F-Zero X is the only official 60fps N64 I know of, and Excitebike 64 is the only reliable 30fps game. Can you verify this? It might've been a software issue, hardware issue, or both. Frankly, it might be more trouble than it's worth on their end, and we're likely NOT going to get the framerate upgrades we'd like. Do you mean that these games only ran 20fps on actual N64 hardware and the emulator emulates this accurately, or that they run nearer 60fps on the N64 and emulators can't keep up?

If it was simply that the emulator was too slow, Nintendo might be able to get around it by putting custom hardware in the Wii to aid emulating whatever aspects of the N64 cause performance problems but if the original games drop frames on real N64, it might not be possible to fix this without changing the games themselves which I doubt they plan to do, because rebuilding old software can be tricky or impossible if the source code and development environments are lost.

See, more trouble than it's worth I imagine the games will get a rez bump to p, and a solid 20fps with no slowdowns, much like the Zelda GC ports. Also, Majora's Mask port had miniscule audio glitches, a stutter, whenever the game had to do sudden camera angle changes that involved loading a new region like in its intro, since Clocktown was composed of 4 separately loaded sections.

I dunno if other N64 games have to worry about this.

Rare Replay's Nintendo 64 games run at 1080p

Having played Starfox recently on an N64 emulator can't remember which one I was impressed that it worked at all, let alone at an acceptable frame rate. It's debatable how much the experience would be improved by bumping the frame rate or even the resolution - what I noticed the most was the low resolution textures and particularly the blocky on screen text - so maybe it is more trouble than it's worth. Thankfully, Microsoft now appears to have corrected this oversight. Perfect Dark on Xbox Live Arcade set the standard for a modern re-release of a classic N64 title, with 4J Studios delivering a welcome p upgrade along with 60fps gameplay and reworked graphics that made the original artwork more palatable for display in high definition, without compromising the original artistic vision for the game. The Banjo-Kazooie games were also given a similar treatment, though these remasters are limited to 30fps with little in the way of visual changes, outside of rendering in p with anti-aliasing and refactoring the presentation to better support widescreen displays.

Perfect Dark is a great example of an N64 remaster. Frame-rates are locked at 60fps across both and Xbox One, with the use of backwards compatibility mode on the latter console having no impact on performance. The two Banjo titles are locked at 30fps - just as they were on Xbox Performance is also identical between Xbox and Xbox One with Perfect Dark offering up a solid 60fps experience that further enhances the remastered visuals and dual analogue controls - it's the definitive way of experiencing Rare's classic shooter.

The use of backwards compatibility mode also means Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel remain locked at 30fps, dashing any hope a performance upgrade could be on the cards. Gameplay still feels smooth and responsive, clearly delivering a firm improvement over the N64 originals. However, we feel the lack of a 60fps is a bit of a missed opportunity, but easily forgivable bearing in mind the wealth of value Rare Replay offers, the high standard of these particular conversions and the quality of the games themselves.

It's been possible to play these games in p with widescreen support via emulation on PC for several years, which is enough to provide a lovely boost in visual fidelity over running on an N64, but never on console. With Rare Replay, rather than manually porting each game across to provide an 'idealised' version of these N64 classics, it seems the minimal amount of work has been done in getting the games up and running on the Xbox One.

We suspect emulation is used instead of directly porting over each of the games individually to the hardware, with what looks like the same baseline emulator handling all four titles. Polygonal elements in KI Gold benefit from p rendering, with clean-looking background details.

However, the upscaled 2D characters don't fare too well in comparison, appearing blurrier than we'd like to see. Perhaps an alternative p mode upscaled with scanlines would have worked better for this particular game, where the focus is on the characters rather than the environments.

Disappointingly, aspect ratios also remain mostly locked to a perspective, with only Jet Force Gemini featuring cut-scenes, whereas the Banjo-Kazooie titles and Perfect Dark were given flawless widescreen presentations via their Xbox remasters. The lack of widescreen support is perplexing considering it is possible to open up the viewpoint of most N64 games via emulation on the PC, expanding the amount of detail visible across the length of our HDTV.

Not all games can be successfully forced into displaying natively inbut most titles work just fine.

For the most part the bulk of the N64 games in the collection sensibly map actions to the Xbox One gamepad, with movement generally handled by the left stick and key actions assigned to the face buttons and triggers - in comparison with playing using an N64 controller on original hardware, the change feels natural and we have no issues comfortably settling down.

However, not every game has been given the same level of consideration in this area: gameplay in Jet Force Gemini is incredibly frustrating as a result, let down by some poor button mapping choices. Everyone is stoked on N64 emulation and any improvements we can get through configurations should be documented here. Before lantus released surreal64 for the Xbox we spent weeks testing every single game and configuring it to optimal performance prior to public release.
