A component group includes nearly all parts of the bike except the frame, seat, wheels and forks. Front and rear derailleurs are part of the Altus group. When you shift, the derailleurs move your chain allowing you to change gears. The rear derailleur works with the right hand shifter and the front derailleur works with the left hand shifter.

The installation of new Altus derailleurs can be done at home with a few tools. Mount your bike in the bike stand with the drivetrain the side your gears are on facing out. This makes it easier to work on the bike. Open the clamp of the front derailleur and position the derailleur onto your down tube the part of the frame extending from your pedals to your seat so the outermost portion of the derailleur cage lines up when looking straight down with your largest chainring front gear.

Move the derailleur up or down until the cage is one millimeter above the largest chainring. Tighten the bolt on the clamp of the derailleur to hold the derailleur in position.

Locate and remove the hangar bolt the large bolt at the top from the rear derailleur. Attach the rear derailleur to the bike frame in the hole near your cassette rear gears. The arm of the derailleur with the jockey wheels hangs downward. Insert the bolt and tighten it until the derailleur is secure. Thread the new chain around the jockey wheels of the rear derailleur, over the cassette, over the largest chainring and through the cage of the front derailleur. Connect the chain by pressing the chain link pin that came with the new chain through the two end links until the links are secure.

Loosen the cable anchor bolt and thread the cable through. Tighten the bolt until the cable is secure. Place a new end cap onto the end of the cable and crimp it with the crimping tool to keep the cable from fraying. Having another bike or bike manual on hand will help remind you how the chain travels around the derailleurs and gears properly.

Using a chain link tool can help if it is difficult to insert the new chain link pin. This article assumes you did not remove your shift cables before you installed the new derailleurs. You will need to adjust the tension of your cables after the installation. Be sure that all bolts are secure. If a derailleur or cable comes loose while riding it could cause you to crash. The bigger pulleys "use up" more chain, so the derailer cage that houses them don't need to be as long and low-hangy. Plus, the bigger pulleys turn more freely. There is no reason on godsgoodearth that all derailers shouldn't have big pulleys, and maybe someday they will.

This means they take up more chainslack and don't need as long a cage. The bigger pulleys turn easier, too. I don't care about that, but I find it interesting that Campagnolo retrofits giant pulleys on its derailers for pro riders sometimes, to reduce turning friction. The thing I really like is that Shimano introduced this big-pulley design near the low-end of its range, probably because they felt it was too risky to introduce on their elite models, figuring the low-brows wouldn't be as tradition-bound.

So there it is: Shimano's best design in a cheap derailer. There are now becoming some other Altus variants. The groovy one is the M Indexes 7 or 8 speed, frictions up to 9. For instance: Big chainring Small That diff is In Walnut Creek, California since Availability Date:. Add To Wishlist.

The derailleur is known for its low price, easy adjustability, reliability and shifting accuracy. However, in order to benefit from the use of an Altus derailleur, it must be adjusted properly. This means checking cable tension and the derailleur's limit settings. Rather than wait for your bike to be worked on by the local bike shop mechanic, learn how to adjust your Altus derailleur at home.

Clamp your bike by the seat post in a bicycle work stand so that you can spin the cranks of the bike freely. If you do not have a work stand, set the bike upside down on its handlebars and seat in order to work. Loosen the cable stop of the Altus derailleur using a 5 mm hex wrench.

Spin the cranks of the bike and allow the chain to shift all the way down to the smallest cog on the cassette. Inspect the alignment of the chain with the small cog. Determine if the derailleur pulley pulls the chain to one side of the cog or the other. This adjustment will be made with the high limit screw, marked on the derailleur with an H.

If the chain sits to the left of the cog, loosen the high limit screw until it is in-line. If the chain sits to the right of the cog, tighten the high limit screw until it is in-line. Pull the downshift lever on the shifter until it stops clicking to be sure the shifter is in the lowest gear. Pull the cable tight through the rear derailleur cable stop using a pair of needle nose pliers and tighten the cable stop using a 5 mm hex wrench. Press the upshift lever on the shifter to shift the chain onto the largest cog while spinning the pedals of the bike by hand.

Inspect the alignment of the chain and cog from the rear of the bike. If the chain is being pulled to the left of the cog, tighten the low limit screw marked with an L using a Phillips head screwdriver.

We will get through this together. Any Shimano cyclist knows how frustrating it is to be unable to shift gears just as you are coming to an important point of your ride. The culprit is more often than not a maladjusted front derailleur. When the front derailleur comes out of alignment, it prevents the chain in the bicycle from moving between higher and lower gears.

There is no need to panic if this happens and it is actually something that you can fix on your own! All you need is a Phillips screwdriver and about 20 minutes. Jonas Jackel. Our Expert Agrees: Use the high and low limit screws to adjust the tension on the derailleur. Make sure that when the derailleur is in the smallest cog, it won't shift too far, causing the chain to drop off the outside of the cassette. Set the other limit so that you can't shift the chain off the back of the cassette into the spokes.

Once the limits are set correctly, adjust the cable tension so the derailleur will correctly shift from one gear to the next. To adjust a Shimano front derailleur, start by making sure it sits at millimeters above the large chain ring. Use a tape measure or a penny, which is 1. Then, loosen the derailleur clamp bolt by turning it clockwise, adjust the derailleur, and tighten the clamp bolt back up.

Once you do this, shift to your middle front chainring to make sure the derailleur cage is at the right height. If not, shift back into low gear and readjust it with the positioning clamp.
