# Unit 2 congruence and triangles answer key

The purpose of the lesson opener is to get students to recall the conditions required to prove triangles congruent and to refer to the applicable theorem by name. In addition, I want all students to recall how to write a flow proof. When the bell rings, I display the lesson opener and ask students to begin on the problem.

This is a classroom routine, so students know what to do. A reminder is provided in the presentation. For more information how I conduct this lesson opener, check out the Strategies folder under my Geometry curriculum on the Better Lesson web site. I award one point for teamwork, one for writing a congruence statement and naming a theorem that applies. Students are required to agree on a team answer, which encourages them to justify their answers to one another MP3. My students have used flow diagrams in the previous unit to prove that triangles are similar, so I am confident that at least one team will use a flow proof in their solution.

If none does, I am prepared to ask how we could use a flow proof to organize our thinking and present our justification in this case. This activity is planned for the next lesson. However, I will use it here if practicing flow proofs begins to get stale or as a sponge if the class moves more quickly.

The purpose of the activity is to introduce students to the two-column format for a proof, while reviewing theorems and properties that can be used in a proof that triangles are congruent.

I have students get white boards, rags, and dry erase markers, while I open up the web site:Practice with Beginning Congruent Triangle Proofs. The web site can be accessed by clicking on the hyperlink in the slide show for this lesson. I point out to the class that the 2-column format is another way to organize the statements and supporting justifications for each in a formal proof.

Beginning with the first line of the first proof, I have students write a justification on their white board and hold it up for me to check. As we work through a few proofs, I pick up the pace. Eventually, I will ask students to number their white boards with the numbers of the lines of each proof and write a justification for each line of the proof. The lesson close asks students to show that two triangles are congruent by naming the theorem that applies.

I display the lesson close question on the front board using the slideshow. I ask students to brainstorm in their teams before writing their answers in their learning journals.Unit 12 - Circles Answer key attached below.

Objective 1: Students will be able to identify similar triangles using Angle-Angle Similarity Display 3 1 Determine whether each pair of triangles is similar. The essential concepts students need to demonstrate or understand to achieve the lesson objective.

Describe how translation of points and line segments can be extended to translate polygonal figures. Translate polygons described by algebraic rules specifically triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, and regular polygons on the coordinate plane. Translate polygons described by vectors specifically triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, and regular polygons off the coordinate plane using constructions and patty paper.

Determine whether two polygons are congruent through transformation by translation. Describe why two polygons are congruent and highlight the angle and distance preservation of translations as evidence. Problems designed to teach key points of the lesson and guiding questions to help draw out student understanding.

Below are four original points, and four points after transformation. Explain your reasoning. How do you know? Can you apply this transformation rule to D to get D'? Use the properties of the transformation you just performed as evidence. How would you use constructions to translate this figure without a coordinate plane? Describe why her reasoning is incorrect, using the properties of translation as evidence.

What are the corresponding parts of these two triangles? How does the difference in translation rules between these two points indicate that the line segment is not congruent?

Is identifying that these two points are not translated by the same rule enough to determine that the shapes are not congruent? Why or why not? A set of suggested resources or problem types that teachers can turn into a problem set. The following resources include problems and activities aligned to the objective of the lesson.

Identification of reflection, rotation, and translation. Question about relationship between line segments of translated figure. Draw a line between corresponding points between translated figures. What is the relationship between all of the lines drawn? As we begin today's lesson I want students to recall our brief discussion about congruent triangles having congruent corresponding parts. For this proof, I will introduce students to a new proof format for our class, the two-column proof.

This is a station work activity. There are often multiple ways to write the proofswhich fosters opportunities for students to agree or disagree with each other while realizing what information they must include to write a high-quality proof.
